As America prepares to celebrate 250 years since Lexington and Concord - just one month from now - we seek inspiration from the courage of the Minutemen and students of Tiananmen Square.
Way back in the 70’s, I stood at Concord to join in a protest when Gerald Ford was making a commemorative speech. Arlo Guthrie sang for us. We chanted”Gerald Fors! Tory Lord!”
How truly ironic that we approach the anniversary of the Battle of Lexington and Concord during these appalling days of Trump. Yet we shall embrace the wounding pain of our current Affliction and welcome it as if we had wished for it, for annealed, the Affliction becomes our passion and courage for a way forward. Unlike the Minutemen, we suffer a distinct challenge, one of paralizing inaction. They could rise up seeing a red coat, gleem of sword and hear the sound of hooves. Our enemy is amorphous, ghostlike, taking many forms, so all the more urgent that we hold our Afffliction close and transform it into Action.
Thank you for this evening’s essay. It certainly covered a lot of ground. How much our country has changed for the worst over the last 7 weeks. I wish that the brilliant and brave men and women who kept America strong and free during the last four years would rise up and shout out how wrong this is on every level. Inspire us to stand up and take back our proud democracy! Speak publicly to the folks who didn’t vote for this shitshow to stop the madness. How can this be happening so fast? And how can we together stop it?
Gosh, I’m screaming for progress and you caution, caution. Let’s pour them into a shallow bowl and mix it up with a whisk and get started reclaiming our democracy before it’s too late! Step by cautious step. But let’s, for God’s sake, get moving forward! Democrats, that’s me, need to man up and fight back. Bullies back down when confronted! So let’s start fighting together. You go Maine Madam Governor. I’m with brilliant, brave The Honorable (mean) Al Green.
…should be Gerald Ford. Little did we envision what was to come, and what is.

It all seems so quaint now.
So good. Valuable and timely words. Thank you so much!

Ironic that the Red Coats have become the Red Hats.

One inch at a time, and one day at a time. The best strategy is to slow things up and outlast the onslaught. But it won't be easy.
