After an antisemitic attack in Pennsylvania nearly triggered martial law, Harvard fires the shot that could save democracy and now finds itself as the de facto leader of the free world.
Excellent piece today. It was my first morning read. Corporate media is very disappointing these days, so we so appreciate writers like you, Rabbi. I had to dig for Gov. Shapiro's story, so thank you so much for covering it and going deep.
There is not a single mention anywhere of rump contacting the Shapiro family offering condolences for the violence wrought against them for the sheer provenance of being Jewish. rump hates Jewish people like he hates anyone who doesn’t look like him. (🤮). I don’t know how he can stand being in the same room with stephen miller.
Fascinating read. I’m Harrison, an ex fine dining industry line cook. My stack "The Secret Ingredient" adapts hit restaurant recipes (mostly NYC and L.A.) for easy home cooking. Dm me if interested in a recommendation swap — we’re growing fast!
This is from the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C. (it´s probably had its federal funding withdrawn as well as the Museum of the American Indian...)
The kids of the White Rose movement at the Munich University (Ludwig Maximillian University) were all executed for their resistance to the nazi regime. The head of the U. was a nazi who betrayed them and had them sent to their deaths. After the war this man lost his position as chancellor of the LMU but continued it in some remote, obscure college in northern Germany. So much for post-war "Entnazifizierung (denazification)." Bravo Rabbi Hammerman, your Notebook is excellent as always.
Why is it that a blond white girl was selected for this photo? Surely, there are more Asian American Harvard students and some African students, too? Putting glasses on this young girl to make her appear studious and thus a future Harvard candidate mocks the idea of student diversity.
Maybe Trump would have done as you suggest, maybe not. Thank God, we don't know the answer to that. But we do know this: If Shapiro and his entire family had been murdered that night, a huge proportion of this country would have been happy. They would have celebrated and rejoiced over our murder, as they have always done. And most of those celebrating would be "progressives".
So I don’t think this thread is either true or helpful. A huge proportion would not have been happy. I don’t even want to attempt to quantify which camp has more antisemites. Let’s just end the thread with that. Please do not reply. Thank you.
Thank you for this description of the film, Jean. It was also broadcasted in portions (I only could watch one) on German TV. Things you describe are new to me. Just before Dachau was freed, this happened:
There are now monuments along the path of this "march" to Tegernsee (my husband performed by one ceremony with his string-quartet, the played works from Jewish composers lost to humanity in the gas chambers of Auschwitz).
"APRIL 26, 1945
Death march from Dachau concentration camp
Just three days before the liberation of the Dachau camp, the SS forces about 7,000 prisoners on a death march from Dachau south to Tegernsee. During the six-day death march, anyone who cannot keep up or continue is shot. Many others die of exposure, hunger, or exhaustion. American forces liberate the Dachau concentration camp on April 29, 1945. In early May 1945, American troops liberate the surviving prisoners from the death march to Tegernsee." Hitler commited suicide on April 30, 1045

Interesting point. And then there’s the sticky question of legacy.
Thank you Rabbi Hammerman and Harvard…fight, fight, fight!

"Most of those celebrating would be "progressives?" Really? Please explain.
Explain why I think they would be "progressives", or why its in quotes?
Sarcasm?
