“Who lost Israel?” is becoming this generation’s “Who lost China?” A little less outrage here will give the forces for sanity in Israel the boost they need to drag democracy over the finish line.
But the battle is needed so that Israelis with the power to change the government know that they are not alone in their fight against extremism. Together, we can save democracy.
All political leaders who stay in power for more than twelve years always devolve into absolute power and dictatorship and lead the country to ruin. Putin, Chi, and Netanyahu fall into this category. In 98 when I spent four months in Israel, I was told by many people that if Netanyahu stayed in power, he would lead the country to war and ruin. I loved my time spent there and love the country, including Palestine and still do. That is why I feel so sad at what is happening in the Middle East.
That’s an interesting theory. I wonder why 12 years is the break point. For FDR it was 12 and would have been more had he lived. It’s certainly true of Bibi, though the checks on his power are currently stronger than those on Trump, including a more vigorous press, independent judiciary, grass roots activism and a more independent military.
Just an imperfect observation. It seems that if leaders in power stay in power for many years, they don't want to ever lose their power. Some consider Roosevelt to have had dictatorial control, but he died, and he used his power for good. The same here in Portugal, but Salazar became paranoid in his old age and jailed anyone who spoke out against him, like all dictators eventually do. Roosevelt never showed this universal dictatorial trait. We will see what happens to Bibi and Trump. All dictators eventually fall. Take the last 200 years of Russia as an example. Putin's dictatorial reign is about to end. The point is the lust for power and how men who have it do not want to lose it.
I just want to know how we can stop our own "Netanyahu" from destroying us. Seems to me we have the same problem Israel has, and no presidential election coming up in 6 months. If we want change, we'll have to change Congress.
A far cry from Jon Stewart but it is unfair to compare. Schleien is a very important element in the fight to return to sanity in Israel. Thank you, Rabbi Hammerman, for introducing him to those like myself who didn´t know him until your post.
In Hebrew, with his fluency and comic timing, he comes off more like Stewart. But also check out the videos where he is talking to young people who do not agree with him. He stands in a room filled with settlers and is not afraid to challenge them. Stewart most often is speaking to the choir. i can’t imagine him even speaking to a convention of the ADL. On the other hand would the ADL even invite him? The problem in a nutshell…
Until the bloody Netanyahu’s government is gone, it seems like an uphill battle.
