Trump’s tirades on communism are old and stale, but also tried and true. Here’s one case where those who forget history will be doomed to repeat it. We can’t let that happen.
In the late 50s, my dad always said that he was on the FBI commie list because he wrote his doctoral thesis on Albert Camus, who was accused of being a communist. He wasn't, and my dad wasn't, and Mamdani isn't, and if people belong to the Communist party, it is not wrong. Here in Portugal, we have one, and I have worked for them at their yearly arts festival! I guess Portugal has freedoms that the US doesn't! It all goes back to Roosevelt and the New Deal that the far right hated and wanted to destroy....and still does!

1). The man who is the President was educated by Roy Cohn, the counsel for HUAC at the request of his father, Fred Trump. Roy taught the young T. very well.
2). For a person who dispises Communists why is it that he praises Putin, a former KGB operative and goes bootlicking to Xi Jinping to get any kind of a trade deal. They laugh at him to his face.
You said it, and so did I the second it slithered out of that foul mouth during that epic speech. "Every word is true. If you just change the word “communism” to “Trump.”´ So true. Thank you for your brilliant page. I awoke at 3am this morning to a score of 2-1 in favor of Belgium. How I wish I could have rooted for my own "home team." But - as usual - everything Trump touches. And thank you for clearing up my complaint that I´m hearing so little about his tirade against communism. We get so little news here in Germany. It is apparently the policy of the German media not to mix into US politics. A fateful policy to say the least, because the AfD, powered also by Musk, pathetically mimics the trumpians. And hardly a German who I know knows anything about this new commie-hate expressed at the 4th of July speech. Trotsky came from a Jewish family. Marx was Jewish. Just wait ... this is just what we need to fan flames. Probably inspired by Miller who - during the Shoah - probably would have been one of the Jews working in a KZ for the SS. Watch where this goes. It´s dangerous stuff playing on a nation of historical ignorance. But so happy for Belgium, and for Europe, it´s made my day. As has your Notebook.
