I think the SNAP funds will be released in November, although only because the growing closeness to Thanksgiving is going to make the withholding of emergency funds seem more heartless and likely to generate thousands of sermons. Maybe the Rhode Island judge will agree and Trump will either be silent or save face by postponing an appeal until December and after the funds are spent.

The set aside for gleaners in Leviticus and the Book of Ruth is an aspiring initiative, although the later tides of feeling about the poor often resisted the offering of life preservers. The charitable approach to gleaners seems to have lasted into the Middle Ages, but increasingly it came under attack as nobles and humbler landowners resisted the set aside as rewarding nonlocals and the undeserving - a conflict that hints at more modern battles between the promoting of charity and the derogation of welfare assistance.

Thank you, Rabbi Hammerman, thank you as always for your great and informative Notes. I so appreciate your wisdom and the wisdom you bring us together with each week. I have learned so much from A Rabbi´s Notebook. And thank you for that list of opportunities to contribute.

Good morning Rabbi, Thank you so much for posting the prayer. I frankly have had a difficult time wording my feelings about all that is going on. I worry, not only about the immigrants and the withdrawal of SNAP; but, just in general about everything. Like Jonathan I think/hope that the 6 billion will be released to at least partially help SNAP recipients in November.

Tomorrow, November 2, is the Sikh parade, a holy holiday. On this day, in Yuba City, literally thousands of people from all over the US and other countries come to celebrate. Starting yesterday the streets are filled with people and free food and that continues until Sunday evening.

The Sikh and many other organizations and churches are providing food and at least one small grocery store is giving a 10% discount to Military members.

My Hmong friends, that keep their chickens here, bring me bounty from their gardens all of the time as well as what they call pancakes. They are a rice mixture with various veggies mixed in, usually yam. Sometimes when they go to the Hmong stores they bring me this really good fish dish or sausage. This out of the goodness of their hearts.

I mention these things because it is important to me to keep in mind that despite all the division in our nation right now, there are many, many good and caring people on both sides of the cultural, political and religious spectrum.

Thank you for taking the time to list all the charities - they are important. Also for including the prayer. And the gleanings quote from Leviticus, we need to remember this is what we are to do, feed the poor.
